What is a Defibrillator?
A defibrillator is a device that gives an electric shock to the heart in someone who is in cardiac arrest. We do this to try to reorganise the chaotic rhythm of the heart to a normal beat and this must be done as soon as possible.
Why do we need more defibs?
For every minute it takes for the defibrillator to reach someone and deliver a shock, their chances of survival reduce by up to 10%. 80% of out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the home and having a defibrillator there can make all the difference, there is a 70% chance of survival if defibrillation happens within 3 minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest. Therefore having a defibrillator in the home will ensure that in the event of requiring one the response can be quick giving the person the best possible chance of recovery.
